I have a "Job" Interview this morning with an Interpreter refferal agency here in Portland. Seeing as I don't have an RID Certification (Becuase I have political objections to the organization, and, well... Cuz I am lazy.), they want to meet with me in person. I am looking forward to that, as talking to the woman on the phone was lots of fun. Thing is, I was not really prepared on this trip for a formal interview, so I had to go buy some dress up clothes and shoes. The real tradgedy was that I had to trim the goatee... It was just a bit on the wild side for an interview... I Don't think it looks bad exactly, it's just that I was working on growing it out... Oh well...

So that was kind of sad.. BUT.. LAst night, I re-did the toes.. Silver with TINY LITTLE GREEN GLITTER over them.

Can I ask why you have political objections to RID? If you'd rather not answer here, or would rather not say anything at all, that's cool, too. It's idle curiosity. (Disclosure: I'm not involved with RID aside from being an associate member.)

I was kinda curious myself, but like was said, only if you feel like talking about it.

And I am sending positive interview energy your way.

My problems with RID are probablly my own issues and/or way out of date. I do get frustrated with the lack of accountability (Currently there is a 9 month turn around for performance test results??? Hello?? 9 MONTHS??? And how much does it cost???) but for the most part, my issues with them came from a long time ago and to be fair, many of them may not be true anymore. But, for what it is worth, here it is:

1) RID is striving to be a monopoly, and that is never a good thing.

2) I don't understand who gets certified and who does not. Some of the best interpreters I know have failed the performance test and some of the RID interpreters I have teamed with have no business being interpreters. It is interesting to me that many of the interpreters that I know who are fabulous, yet failed, look different (Read: Non-white). This is only something I have observed and I am in NO WAY accusing ANYONE of racism. Yet, there is no accountability and reasons for failing are never given. What's up with that?

3) The 2-d video model for the test is NOT a test of interpreting skills in the real world. IRL, interpreting is a dynamic process where visual cues are picked up and recieved from both the client and the interpreter (sometimes subconsciously) and modes, styles, sign choices, ect.. are adjusted accordingly. I feel that evaluating skill in this way encourages a rigid mode of interpreting that does not serve the client, especially clients with lower language skills.

You asked.. and these are only my opinions, and they were formed many years ago. Things may have changed. And also, I need to adjust my attitude since I am no longer going to have a choice of certificating and am going to be forced to join RID. WHY OH WHY did I allow my NAD Cert to lapse???

Your chin is still awfully woofy, pal. Are you the sort who is ameanable to chin skritching? If so, consider your goatee skritched, 'cause I love skritching woofy goatees.... :-)

And the toes are fabulous! (Maybe I'm a freak, but I'm jealous of your furriness ;-) I'll have to look into glitter myself; it seems so fantastically whimsical.

JOhn.

Man, you're hot. particularly the tendons and fur on your feet. additionally, that shade of spangly green has an excitingly campy-alien look about it.

Ok so, i give up; what the hell is that yellow thing in the background of your head photo? A long shoehorn? a beatin' cane? flypaper? what?!

I was wondering about the yellow thing, too. Probably something sexual, huh?

If that sweet face and cunning charm didn't get you that job, then those toes will bring you over the top!

I was wondering about the 'coloring inside the lines' issue myself! :-) Even with the artistic flare that they were painted with, it's all still fabulous. And the beard with the face behind it is still a sexy thing to look at. Even with having to trim that mane, I suspect that you're one of those seriously hirsuit guys that can grow it all back in a week once you get a job pinned down. :-)

It can be a charming city but with all of the Denver-like air pollution and the dreary, dreary rainy weather and the very bad economy...I can only wish you the best of luck.
