I understand that for you, marriage is a religious institution and that while you totally support Gays having access to the same rights, the word "marriage" is sacred and out of bounds. Really, I get it. I see what it is you are being asked to give up in all of this: your religious beliefs. You are being asked go against your religion for the sake of civil rights, and it is unfair. I get it.
But, you see... Marriage is also an issue of law. Even the word itself is written into law now. So now, as a matter of law, equality is marriage, and nothing less.
And we didn't make it that way. We didn't blur those lines. We didn't write a religious institution into the legal fabric of our nation. You did. In your belief in your absolute hegemony, you arrogantly saw no possible harm in it. So now, here we are, and in order to have the justice that the very fabric of our country, and the very tenants of your religion demand, YOU have to suck it up and pay the price. It's your mess. Fix it.
And THIS is why we scream for a separation of church and state!
